Discover winter in Alaska on a three-day, two-night women’s-only adventure that brings together dog sledding, ice fishing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and chances to see the northern lights. Guided entirely by women and created for women, this trip is a chance to experience Alaska’s winter backcountry in a welcoming, adventurous setting. By day, explore snow-covered trails, frozen lakes and mountain scenery, and as night falls, head outside to watch the sky for the aurora borealis.

Note: Drivers must be 18 years or older; kids 8 and up may ride as a passenger. We do not provide drivers for our tours. If you are a single participant, please call to book!

What's included?

This women’s-only tour includes a 2-hour dog sledding adventure, a 3-hour snowmobile ride into the Talkeetna Mountains with a return trip on the final day, and a guided visit to Matanuska Glacier. You’ll stay two nights in private cabins at Snowhook Lodge, with hearty meals and snowshoeing opportunities on the surrounding trails. The entire adventure is guided by experienced women guides, and all necessary cold-weather gear and equipment are provided.

Tour Details

Your women’s-only northern lights adventure begins with a two-hour dog sled ride through Alaska’s snow-covered forests and over frozen lakes. Guided entirely by experienced women guides, you’ll spend the first day exploring the winter backcountry before enjoying lunch and boarding our top-of-the-line snowmobiles for the ride up the mountain to Snowhook Lodge on Hatcher Pass. Along the way, enjoy snow-covered trails, mountain views and chances to see local wildlife. If we’re lucky, Denali will be out too!

Once you arrive at the lodge, settle into your private cabin while dinner is prepared. As night falls, head outside with your group for your first chance to see the northern lights. You can explore the trails on snowshoes under the night sky or relax at the lodge and watch for the aurora surrounded by the mountains of Hatcher Pass.

After a hearty mountain breakfast on your second day, we’ll head back down the pass for a guided ice fishing experience on one of Alaska’s frozen lakes. Our women guides will show you the basics and help you get set up for a chance to catch Arctic char, northern pike and rainbow trout. After ice fishing, return to Snowhook Lodge for lunch and some free time. Relax in the hot tub or sauna, snowshoe around the property or simply enjoy time with the group before gathering for dinner and another chance to see the northern lights.

On the final morning, enjoy breakfast at the lodge before getting back on your snowmobiles for the ride down the mountain to our base in Willow. This final ride gives you one more chance to enjoy Alaska’s snow-covered trails and mountain scenery before bringing your three-day women’s winter adventure to an end.

Day 1: Dog Sled & Snowmobile Adventure

Finish the Day at Snowhook Lodge

Day one of your women’s-only Alaska winter adventure begins with a two-hour dog sled ride through snow-covered forests and across frozen lakes. Travel behind a team of Alaskan huskies with experienced women guides as you explore the winter trails and experience one of Alaska’s most iconic adventures. It’s a great way to start the trip and gives your group its first taste of the backcountry around Willow.

After a warm lunch and some time to relax, you’ll board our snowmobiles for the ride up to Snowhook Lodge on Hatcher Pass. The trail climbs through the mountains with incredible views of the surrounding wilderness along the way. Keep an eye out for local wildlife and, if the weather is clear, there may even be a chance to see Denali in the distance.

Once you arrive at Snowhook Lodge, settle into your private cabin and enjoy dinner after a full day of adventure. As night falls, head outside with your group for your first chance to see the northern lights. You can snowshoe along the trails under the night sky or stay closer to the lodge, where the open mountain setting of Hatcher Pass offers great opportunities to watch for the aurora.

Day 2: Ice Fishing Experience

Another Night of Aurora Viewing

The second day of your women’s-only adventure begins with a hearty mountain breakfast at Snowhook Lodge. It’s a chance to ease into the morning, enjoy the surrounding winter scenery and spend some time with the group before heading out for another day in the Alaskan backcountry.

Next, you’ll head out for a 2.5-hour ice fishing experience with our women guides. They’ll help you get set up, show you the basics and give you a chance to try your hand at catching fish through the ice. It’s a fun and relaxed way to experience another side of winter in Alaska, surrounded by frozen lakes, fresh air and incredible scenery.

After ice fishing, return to Snowhook Lodge for lunch and some free time to relax or explore at your own pace. As evening approaches, gather for dinner before heading outside with the group for another chance to see the northern lights over Hatcher Pass.

Day 3: A Return Back to Willow

One Last Ride Through the Mountains

The third and final day of your women’s-only Alaska winter adventure begins with breakfast at Snowhook Lodge and one last morning surrounded by the mountains of Hatcher Pass. Take some time to enjoy the lodge, look back on the past few days with the group, and get ready for the final ride of the trip.

After breakfast, you’ll get back on your snowmobile with our women guides and begin the ride down Hatcher Pass toward our base in Willow. The return journey gives you another chance to enjoy the snow-covered trails, mountain scenery and open winter landscape as you make your way back through the Alaskan backcountry.

Once you arrive in Willow, your three-day adventure comes to an end. After dog sledding, snowmobiling, ice fishing, snowshoeing and watching the sky for the northern lights, you’ll leave with memories from some of our favorite Alaska winter experiences and a few unforgettable days spent exploring them together.

What's included in the tour?

All necessary cold-weather outer gear and activity equipment is provided, so everything you need for your winter adventure is taken care of.

What's not included in the tour?

Alcoholic beverages and gratuities for your guides are not included in the tour price.

What causes the northern lights in Alaska?

The northern lights begin with charged particles travelling from the sun toward Earth. When these particles interact with gases high in our atmosphere, they produce the glowing colors we see moving across the night sky. The conditions are constantly changing, which means no two aurora displays are ever exactly alike.

Why is Alaska good for seeing the northern lights?

Alaska sits beneath the auroral oval, an area around the Earth where northern lights activity occurs frequently. Combine that location with long winter nights, wide-open landscapes and areas away from city lights, and you have some excellent conditions for aurora viewing. Hatcher Pass also gives us the chance to watch the sky from a beautiful mountain setting away from much of Anchorage’s light pollution.

Can you predict the northern lights

Aurora forecasts can tell us when solar activity is likely to produce the northern lights, but there is never a guarantee that you’ll see them. Cloud cover, local weather and changing solar conditions all play a part. Our guides keep an eye on the forecasts throughout your stay and use their local knowledge to make the most of the conditions we have.

What advice can you give for photography?

Bring a camera that allows you to control settings manually and, if possible, a sturdy tripod. It’s worth becoming familiar with your camera before arriving so you’re comfortable changing the shutter speed, aperture and ISO in the dark. When the northern lights appear, our guides can also help you get set up and offer advice based on the conditions that night.

When is the best time to see the aurora in Alaska?

Northern lights season in Alaska generally runs from late September through early April, when the darker nights give you more opportunities to see the aurora. There still needs to be enough solar activity and clear skies, but travelling during the winter puts you in Alaska during the main aurora-viewing season. Your two nights at Snowhook Lodge give you more than one opportunity to watch the skies.

Is this tour exclusively for women?

Yes. This adventure has been created as a women’s-only experience, and bookings are only accepted for women. Men cannot book or participate in this tour. We offer other Alaska winter adventures for mixed groups, couples, families and anyone travelling with men.

Will my guides be women?

This is a women-led adventure, and our intention is for the tour to be guided by women throughout your three days with us. In exceptional circumstances, such as illness, an unexpected staffing issue or another situation outside our control, it may be necessary for a male guide to lead or assist with part or all of the tour. This would always be a last resort, but Snowhook reserves the right to make this change when necessary to safely operate the adventure.

What should I wear during the tour?

Start with good thermal base layers and warm mid-layers that you can adjust depending on the activity and weather. We provide the necessary cold-weather outer gear for the adventure, along with the specialist equipment required for your activities. You therefore don’t need to buy or travel with a complete set of specialist Alaska winter gear before joining us.

Can weather affect my northern lights experience?

Absolutely. Even when aurora activity is strong, cloud cover can prevent us from seeing what is happening above it. Alaska’s winter weather can also change quickly, particularly in the mountains. Our guides monitor both the weather and aurora forecasts and will make the most of the viewing conditions available during your stay.

How many opportunities will we have to see the northern lights?

You’ll spend two nights in Alaska during your three-day adventure, giving the group multiple opportunities to watch for the northern lights. Where conditions allow, we’ll make the most of both evenings rather than relying on a single night. The aurora is a natural phenomenon and can never be guaranteed, but having two nights gives you more chances for the weather and solar activity to come together.

How should I prepare for the trip?

Pack the personal items you’d normally need for a three-day stay, along with warm base and mid-layers, any medication you require and a camera if you want to photograph the northern lights. We provide the necessary cold-weather outer gear and equipment for the activities. It’s also worth arriving well rested, as your days will be filled with winter adventures and a good aurora display might keep the group outside later into the evening.

What about safety during the adventure?

Our guides are trained in safety procedures and first aid, and the equipment used throughout your adventure is checked and maintained for Alaska’s winter conditions. You’ll be travelling through genuine backcountry and mountain environments, where weather and trail conditions can change quickly. Listen to your guides, follow their instructions during each activity and let them know if you have any concerns while you’re out on the trail.
