Day 1: Dog Sled & Snowmobile Adventure

Into the Mountains to Snowhook Lodge

Day one of your Alaska winter adventure begins in Willow with a dog sled ride through snow-covered forests and across frozen trails. Travel behind a team of Alaskan huskies as you explore the winter landscape and experience one of Alaska’s most iconic adventures. It’s a great way to begin the week and gives you your first taste of the backcountry you’ll be exploring over the next seven days.

After your dog sled adventure, you’ll board our snowmobiles for the ride up to Snowhook Lodge on Hatcher Pass. The trail climbs into the mountains with incredible views of the surrounding wilderness along the way. Keep an eye out for local wildlife and, if the weather is clear, there may even be a chance to see Denali in the distance.

Once you arrive at Snowhook Lodge, settle in and enjoy dinner after your first day of adventure. The evening is yours to relax, enjoy the mountain setting, and get ready for the days ahead. As darkness falls over Hatcher Pass, keep an eye on the sky too; this will be your first chance of the week to see the Northern Lights.

Day 2: Snowmobiling & Ice Fishing

End the Day Under the Northern Lights

After breakfast at Snowhook Lodge, day two takes you back into the mountains for a full day of snowmobiling and ice fishing around Hatcher Pass and West Gateway. Ride through snow-covered trails and open winter landscapes as our guides take you farther into the Alaskan backcountry, with plenty of time to enjoy the scenery and experience the mountains along the way.

During the day, we’ll trade the snowmobiles for fishing gear and spend some time ice fishing on a frozen Alaskan lake. Our guides will get you set up and show you the basics before enjoying lunch out on the ice. It’s a chance to slow things down for a while, try another Alaska winter tradition and enjoy being surrounded by the mountains before continuing your adventure.

After returning to Snowhook Lodge for dinner, the adventure isn’t quite finished. We’ll head back out into the night by snowmobile or tracked vehicle to search for the northern lights. Away from the city lights and surrounded by the mountains of Hatcher Pass, you’ll have another opportunity to watch for the aurora before returning to the lodge for the night.

Day 3: Hatcher Pass Snowmobile Adventure

A Full Day Exploring the Mountains

Day three is all about snowmobiling. After breakfast at Snowhook Lodge, we’ll head into Hatcher Pass for a full day exploring the mountains, trails and backcountry that make this one of our favorite places to ride in Alaska. With an entire day ahead of us, there is time to travel farther, explore different terrain and enjoy some of the incredible scenery surrounding the lodge.

Conditions in the mountains are always changing, and our guides will use their local knowledge to make the most of the day. Depending on the snow and weather, you could find yourself riding mountain trails, through fresh powder and across wide-open areas surrounded by the Talkeetna Mountains. We’ll stop along the way for a rustic box lunch before getting back on the snowmobiles and continuing the ride.

After a full day in the mountains, return to Snowhook Lodge for dinner and an evening on your own. Relax at the lodge, enjoy the mountain surroundings and rest up for the next part of the journey. If the skies are clear, there is always another chance to step outside and look for the northern lights over Hatcher Pass.

Day 4: Matanuska Glacier

Walk the Ice Before Heading to Eureka

Day four takes the adventure beyond Hatcher Pass as we travel toward Matanuska Glacier, one of Alaska’s most incredible natural landmarks. The drive itself takes you through some beautiful Southcentral Alaska scenery before arriving at the glacier for a chance to get out onto the ice and experience this enormous river of ice up close.

With an experienced glacier guide leading the way, you’ll explore the ice, see its incredible blue colors and formations, and learn more about the glacier and the landscape surrounding it. There will be plenty of opportunities for photos and time to take in the scale of the glacier before enjoying a rustic box lunch and continuing the journey.

Rather than returning to Hatcher Pass, we’ll continue farther into Alaska toward Eureka, where we’ll spend the night. Settle in at Eureka Lodge and enjoy dinner after a day on the road and the ice. Tomorrow brings another full day outside, this time exploring an entirely different part of Alaska by snowmobile.

Day 5: Eureka Snowmobile Adventure

Ride Toward Nelchina Glacier

After breakfast at Eureka Lodge, we’ll get back on the snowmobiles for another full day in the Alaskan backcountry. Eureka offers a completely different riding experience from Hatcher Pass, giving you the chance to explore another one of our favorite winter areas while travelling through wide-open terrain surrounded by incredible mountain scenery.Today’s ride takes us through the Eureka backcountry and toward the Nelchina Glacier region. With our experienced local guides leading the way, the route will be shaped by snow, weather and trail conditions so we can make the most of the day. We’ll stop for a rustic lunch along the way, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the scenery and experience just how remote this part of Alaska can feel.
After a full day of riding, return to Eureka Lodge for dinner and your second night away from Hatcher Pass. By this point in the trip you’ll have experienced two very different Alaska snowmobiling areas, travelled across some incredible winter country and seen a side of Southcentral Alaska that most visitors never get the chance to explore.

Day 6: Palmer & Alaska Horse Adventure

From Palmer Back to Hatcher Pass

Day six begins with breakfast at Eureka Lodge before we start making our way back toward Hatcher Pass. After several days of snowmobiles, glaciers and backcountry trails, today brings a change of pace as we travel through the Alaska countryside toward Palmer, stopping for lunch along the way.In Palmer, you’ll join Alaska Horse Adventures for a horse-drawn sleigh or trail ride and experience the winter landscape from an entirely different perspective. It’s a more relaxed way to spend part of the day, surrounded by Alaska scenery and enjoying one more winter experience before we continue back toward the mountains.
From Palmer, we’ll return to Snowhook Lodge on Hatcher Pass for dinner and your final night of the adventure. Settle back into the lodge, relax after almost a week of exploring and enjoy one last evening surrounded by the mountains. If the northern lights make an appearance, it’s the perfect way to finish your final night in Alaska’s winter backcountry.

Day 7: One Final Snowmobile Ride

The Journey Back to Anchorage

After six days of dog sledding, snowmobiling, ice fishing, glaciers and travelling through Southcentral Alaska, it’s time to get ready for the final ride of the week. You’ll board the snowmobiles one more time and ride down from Hatcher Pass, following the snowy trails back toward our base in Willow. It’s one last chance to enjoy the mountain scenery, winter trails and Alaskan backcountry before leaving the snowmobiles behind and beginning the journey back toward Anchorage.
From Willow, we’ll take care of your transportation back to Anchorage, bringing your seven-day Best of Alaska Winter Adventure to an end. FAQ's

This trip brings together dog sledding, several days of snowmobiling, ice fishing, Matanuska Glacier, a winter horse experience and opportunities to see the northern lights. You’ll travel through Hatcher Pass, Eureka, the Matanuska Glacier region and other parts of Southcentral Alaska, staying overnight along the way rather than returning to the same location every day.

No. You don’t need to arrive with previous dog sledding, snowmobiling or ice fishing experience. Our guides will introduce you to each activity and help you get comfortable with the equipment before heading out. If you already have riding experience, there will also be plenty of opportunities to enjoy more time exploring Alaska by snowmobile.

You should be comfortable spending several hours outdoors and taking part in active winter experiences over consecutive days. Snowmobiling, dog sledding and walking on the glacier can all require some physical effort, although there is also downtime throughout the week. If you have concerns about your fitness or ability to participate, please contact us before booking and we can talk through the trip with you.

You’ll spend several nights at Snowhook Lodge on Hatcher Pass before travelling farther into Alaska and staying at Eureka Lodge. The itinerary has been designed so your accommodation becomes part of the journey, allowing you to explore different areas without spending every day travelling back to the same base.

Meals are included throughout the adventure, from breakfasts and dinners at the lodges to lunches while we’re out exploring. Some days may include a rustic or packed lunch while we’re snowmobiling or travelling between locations. If you have allergies or specific dietary requirements, please let us know before your trip so we can discuss what can be accommodated.

We provide the necessary cold-weather gear and specialist equipment for the activities included in your adventure. You should still bring your normal winter clothing and personal items for a week in Alaska. We’ll provide guidance before your arrival so you know what to pack and what will already be waiting for you.
Snowmobiling is a major part of this adventure rather than a single short activity. You’ll ride into Hatcher Pass, spend full days exploring different riding areas, experience the backcountry around Eureka and finish the week with another ride down from Snowhook Lodge. The exact routes and amount of riding can vary with weather, snow and trail conditions.

Not necessarily. Winter in Alaska can change quickly, and snow, weather, trail and road conditions can affect where and when we travel. Our guides may adjust routes, timing or the order of activities when necessary. That flexibility allows us to make the most of the conditions while keeping the group safe throughout the week.

No. The northern lights are a natural phenomenon, so nobody can guarantee when they will appear. What we can give you is several nights away from Anchorage’s city lights, including time at Snowhook Lodge on Hatcher Pass, giving you multiple opportunities during the week to step outside and watch the sky when conditions are right.

You’ll travel to Matanuska Glacier and head out onto the ice with an experienced glacier guide. It’s a chance to see the glacier’s blue ice, formations and surrounding mountain landscape up close rather than simply viewing it from the road. Conditions on the glacier change throughout winter, so the exact route is determined by the guides on the day.

We’ll spend time on a frozen Alaskan lake where our guides will help get you set up and show you the basics of fishing through the ice. It’s a more relaxed part of the week and a great contrast to the days spent travelling through the mountains by snowmobile. Fishing conditions and catches vary, so catching a fish can never be guaranteed.
Transportation connected with the adventure is taken care of, including your transfer from Anchorage and travel between the different areas included in the itinerary. Depending on the day, you could be travelling by road, snowmobile or another suitable vehicle. At the end of the adventure, transportation back to Anchorage is also included.
Safety comes first, particularly on a multi-day trip travelling through different parts of Alaska. If weather, snow, road or trail conditions make a planned activity or route unsuitable, our guides may change the day’s plans or use an alternative route or experience. Alaska conditions are part of the adventure, and building some flexibility into the week helps us give you the best experience possible.
This adventure is for people who want to experience more of Alaska than they could on a single day tour. It works particularly well for guests who enjoy being outdoors, want to try several different winter activities and like the idea of travelling through different parts of Southcentral Alaska with local guides taking care of the logistics. You don’t need to be an expert adventurer, but you should arrive ready for a full week of winter in Alaska

Additional Information

Preparing for seven days of winter adventure in Alaska is part of the experience, and conditions can vary considerably as we travel between Hatcher Pass, Matanuska Glacier, Eureka and the surrounding backcountry. Before your trip, you can check current forecasts on the National Weather Service’s Alaska page and keep up with road and travel conditions through Alaska 511. We provide the necessary cold-weather gear and activity equipment, but you should still arrive prepared for a full week of Alaska winter weather.

Your adventure also includes ice fishing, and guests should review the Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s sport fishing information and regulations before travelling.
